Ketogenic Diet as a Normal Way of Eating in Adults With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes: A Qualitative Study

Kayla Wong et al.

Summary: The study found that the main motivation for diabetes patients to follow the ketogenic diet was to improve blood glucose control and lose weight, with most participants considering it a normalized way of eating that they would continue for the rest of their lives.

Do Lower-Carbohydrate Diets Increase Total Energy Expenditure? An Updated and Reanalyzed Meta-Analysis of 29 Controlled-Feeding Studies

David S. Ludwig et al.

Summary: The study found that lower-carbohydrate diets can temporarily reduce TEE in the short term, but there is a larger increase after approximately 2.5 weeks. These results highlight the importance of longer trials in understanding the chronic effects of macronutrients, and suggest a mechanism whereby lower-carbohydrate diets may facilitate weight loss.

Effect of a plant-based, low-fat diet versus an animal-based, ketogenic diet on ad libitum energy intake

Summary: In an inpatient, randomized controlled crossover trial, participants consumed 550-700 fewer calories per day when following a plant-based, low-fat diet with a high glycemic load compared with an animal-based, low-carbohydrate diet with a low glycemic load; weight loss was comparable between the two diets and there were no significant differences in hunger or enjoyment of the meals.

Efficacy and safety of low and very low carbohydrate diets for type 2 diabetes remission: systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished randomized trial data

Joshua Z. Goldenberg et al.

Summary: Patients with type 2 diabetes adhering to a low carbohydrate diet for six months may experience remission of diabetes without adverse consequences. There were significant improvements in weight loss, triglycerides, and insulin sensitivity at six months, but these improvements diminished at 12 months. VLCDs were found to be less effective than less restrictive LCDs for weight loss at six months, but this was due to diet adherence.

Association of Lipid, Inflammatory, and Metabolic Biomarkers With Age at Onset for Incident Coronary Heart Disease in Women

Sagar B. Dugani et al.

Summary: Risk profiles for the onset of coronary heart disease differ by age in women, with diabetes and insulin resistance being the strongest risk factors for premature events. Most risk factors show attenuated associations with increasing age at onset, with some factors showing consistent associations across different age groups, and others showing no association at all.

Temporal Associations Among Body Mass Index, Fasting Insulin, and Systemic Inflammation A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Natasha Wiebe et al.

Summary: Through analyzing 60 studies, it was found that most participants in the studies experienced decreases in BMI, fasting insulin level, and C-reactive protein level. The study suggests that changes in fasting insulin levels precede changes in weight, and there is a positive correlation between fasting insulin level and BMI, rather than obesity causing noncommunicable chronic diseases and premature death.

Apolipoprotein B and Non-HDL Cholesterol Better Reflect Residual Risk Than LDL Cholesterol in Statin-Treated Patients

Camilla Ditlev Lindhardt Johannesen et al.

Summary: Elevated levels of apoB and non-HDL cholesterol, but not LDL cholesterol, are associated with residual risk of all-cause mortality and myocardial infarction in statin-treated patients. Discordance analysis indicates that apoB is a more accurate marker of all-cause mortality risk and risk of myocardial infarction in these patients compared to LDL cholesterol.
