Summary: Preterm-born children are at risk for neurodevelopmental problems and cardiometabolic diseases later in life, with early-life growth restriction and suboptimal neonatal nutrition identified as risk factors. High protein and energy intake in the first weeks of life can improve growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes, but transitioning to a higher protein-to-energy ratio after 32-34 weeks postconceptional age is recommended to prevent excess fat mass and long-term health risks. Postnatally, consideration should be given to a protein-enriched diet to optimize growth patterns and minimize cardiometabolic risks in preterm infants.
