Diversity of cyanobacteria and algae in dependence to forest-forming tree species and properties rocks of dump

I. A. Maltseva et al.

Summary: Restoration of ecosystems in mining-disturbed areas is a slow process, and the main purpose of revegetation measures is to accelerate this process. This research focuses on the changes in cyanobacteria and algae diversity and abundance in reforested areas and waste rock dumps in Ukraine, and found that the diversity and abundance of cyanobacteria and algae depend on soil qualities and forest-forming tree species. The study provides insights for designing artificial habitats and selecting tree species that can create forest ecosystems equivalent to natural ones.

Functional responses of aquatic invertebrates to anthropogenic stressors in riparian zones of Neotropical savanna streams

Kele R. Firmiano et al.

Summary: Riparian zones play a crucial role in freshwater ecosystem processes and biodiversity conservation. A study on freshwater invertebrates in Neotropical savanna headwater streams revealed that certain biological traits are significantly impacted by anthropogenic stressors, such as increased disturbance, lower substrate heterogeneity, and higher water temperature. These findings provide valuable insights for environmental management and monitoring efforts in tropical savanna headwater ecosystems globally.

Alkaline soil pH affects bulk soil, rhizosphere and root endosphere microbiomes of plants growing in a Sandhills ecosystem

Lucas Dantas Lopes et al.

Summary: Soil pH significantly influences microbial communities in the rhizosphere, root endosphere, and bulk soil. Plant species have a stronger impact on belowground microbiomes in alkaline soils. Cation exchange capacity, in addition to pH, plays a significant role in shaping bulk soil microbial communities.

Impacts of riparian width and stream channel width on ecological networks in main waterways and tributaries

Muhammad Arif et al.

Summary: The study in the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir in China found that riparian buffer width had the greatest impact on the main waterway, while stream channel width had the most influence on tributaries. The correlation coefficient strengths among ecological and stress parameters were relatively greater in main waterway riparian zones, while stress parameters showed significant relationships with ecological parameters in tributaries.

Contribution of soil microbial necromass to SOC stocks during vegetation recovery in a subtropical karst ecosystem

Zhiming Guo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that soil microbial community in karst landscapes has the capacity to adapt to changing conditions and contribute significantly to increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks during ecosystem recovery. Increases in SOC stocks are positively correlated with the abundance of microbial residue carbon (MRC) and changes in microbial community composition, reflecting improvements in soil structure and nutrient content. Bacterial MRC plays a more significant role than fungal residue carbon in contributing to SOC stocks, with different microbial groups showing distinct patterns in different soil layers and vegetation types.

Effects of root morphological traits on soil detachment for ten herbaceous species in the Loess Plateau

Bing Wang et al.

Summary: Plant root systems play a crucial role in reducing soil erosion, with fibrous roots proving to be more effective in reducing soil detachment compared to tap roots. Root surface area density (RSAD) is identified as a primary root trait affecting soil detachment capacity, with a simple equation proposed for simulating soil detachment capacity when plant root parameters and soil properties are limited.

Responses of Swamp Cypress (Taxodium distichum) and Chinese Willow (Salix matsudana) Roots to Periodic Submergence in Mega-Reservoir: Changes in Organic Acid Concentration

Xinrui He et al.

Summary: In a study exploring the responses of two woody plant species to flooding, it was found that Taxodium distichum and Salix matsudana could adapt well to different water regimes, adjusting their organic acid metabolisms to normal levels in the spring. The exotic species had a more stable metabolism to winter flooding, while the native species responded more actively to long-term winter flooding, making both species viable for vegetation restoration in specific conditions.

The convergence of species composition along the drawdown zone of the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir, China: implications for restoration

Jie Zheng et al.

Summary: The study on the plant composition and similarity in the drawdown zone of the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir in China revealed extreme similarity in plant community composition across the three different river segments, with a steady declining trend in species richness along the drawdown zone. Environmental and spatial factors were found to contribute to 11% and 8% of the species composition change, respectively. These results highlighted the impact of dam impoundment on species composition and emphasized the importance of restoration activities in overcoming barriers to seed dispersal and seedling establishment in the degraded drawdown zone ecosystem.

Nitrogen and water addition regulate fungal community and microbial co-occurrence network complexity in the rhizosphere of Alhagi sparsifolia seedlings

Zhihao Zhang et al.

Summary: Rhizosphere microbes play a crucial role in phreatophyte establishment in extremely arid environments. This study found that nitrogen deposition can alter microbial communities in arid lands, with nitrogen and water interaction significantly impacting fungal community composition. The stability of rhizobacterial communities to nitrogen and water inputs was also observed. Additionally, microbial community composition at the OTU level was related to soil properties and plant traits.

Summary: This study identified a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to photosynthesis, carbon fixation, and sugar metabolism in bermudagrass under shallow and deep submergence treatments. These DEGs showed different regulatory patterns in aboveground and underground tissues of bermudagrass, providing insights into the adaptability mechanisms of bermudagrass to submergence stress.

Muhammad Arif et al.

Summary: The study found that riparian health parameters in the Three Gorges Dam Reservoir and associated tributaries were significantly affected by disturbances, showing high diversity in key variables such as habitat, plant cover, regeneration, and erosion. Principal component analysis identified critical factors impacting these water bodies, including farming systems, land-use types, and pollutant activity variables, with notable differences between the main waterway and tributaries.
