Substitution effect on the nonradiative decay and trans → cis photoisomerization route: a guideline to develop efficient cinnamate-based sunscreens

Shin-nosuke Kinoshita et al.

Summary: Cinnamate derivatives are important for UV protection and sunscreen, converting UV energy to thermal energy through photoisomerization. Substitution at specific positions on the phenyl ring of methylcinnamate affects the efficiency of the photoisomerization route. Stabilizing the highest occupied pi orbital plays a key role in the efficient conversion of UV energy to thermal energy.
