Ultrafast spin current generated from an antiferromagnet

Hongsong Qiu et al.

Summary: Antiferromagnets (AFMs) have the potential to push spintronic devices to terahertz range for high-speed processing, but their insensitivity to magnetic fields makes spin current manipulation difficult. By optically generating ultrafast spin currents in AFM/HM heterostructures, a new avenue for fundamental research into antiferromagnetism and AFM spintronic devices has been opened.

Enhancement in optically induced ultrafast THz response of MoSe2MoS2 heterobilayer

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: The THz conductivity of large area MoS2 and MoSe2 monolayers and their vertical heterostructure, MoSe2MoS2, was measured in the 0.3-5 THz frequency range. The ultrafast THz reflectivity of the MoSe2MoS2 heterobilayer is greatly enhanced when optically excited above the direct band gap energies of the constituting monolayers, with free carriers evolving with characteristic times found in each monolayer. Surprisingly, a similar enhancement is observed in the ultrafast THz reflectivity of the heterobilayer when excited below the bandgap energy of MoS2, with a proposed mechanism to explain these observations.

THz spintronic emitters: a review on achievements and future challenges

Evangelos Th Papaioannou et al.

Summary: THz spintronics is a research direction that combines magnetism, optical physics, and ultrafast photonics. The experimental scheme involves using femtosecond laser pulses to trigger spin and charge dynamics in thin films. Key challenges include increasing intensity, shaping frequency bandwidth, and controlling the transport of ultrafast spin current for radiation source control.

THz pulses from optically excited Fe-, Pt- and Ta-based spintronic heterostructures

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: Spintronic heterostructures are considered as the new generation terahertz sources due to their capability of producing high power and broadband THz radiation. By using optically excited bi- and tri-layer combinations of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic thin films, the efficiency and broadband spectrum of THz emitters can be optimized. The inverse spin Hall effect in the heavy metal layer of the heterostructure is primarily responsible for generating THz pulses.
