Shape Changing Robots: Bioinspiration, Simulation, and Physical Realization

Dylan Shah et al.

Summary: The dynamic plasticity of living tissues allows for adaptation and reconfiguration, a feature lacking in artificial systems which must operate robustly in the natural world. Researchers are now designing robots with the ability to edit their own structure and creating new algorithms to control these changes. The use of multifunctional materials, distributed actuation and sensing, and somatic control are key innovations enabling the development of next-generation shape changing robots.

Stable and High-Strain Dielectric Elastomer Actuators Based on a Carbon Nanotube-Polymer Bilayer Electrode

Zihang Peng et al.

Summary: Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) show promise in various applications due to their large actuation strain, high energy density, and light weight, but their practical applications are hindered by poor reliability and durability under high-strain actuation. Compliant electrodes with self-clearing capability have been studied to prevent premature failures.

Innervated, Self-Sensing Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators with Closed Loop Control

Arda Kotikian et al.

Summary: The study reports the programmable assembly of innervated LCE actuators (iLCEs) with prescribed contractile actuation, self-sensing, and closed loop control via core-shell 3D printing. This research demonstrates that iLCEs can be regulated with closed loop control even when perturbed with large bias loads.

Fingerprint-inspired electronic skin based on triboelectric nanogenerator for fine texture recognition

Xuan Zhao et al.

Summary: The tactile perception of fine textures in humans is mediated by fingertip skin, which is crucial for obtaining environmental information and manipulating objects precisely. Electronic skins based on triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) have shown impressive applications in fine texture recognition by accurately mapping surface textures to electrical signals and revealing physical information. The fingerprint-inspired electronic skin (FE-skin) developed in this study can effectively detect and identify different textures by mimicking human fingerprints' morphology, achieving high accuracy rates in texture recognition through processing electrical signals with artificial neural networks. This technology demonstrates TENG's potential superiority in bionic tactile perception and has broad application prospects in humanoid robots, intelligent prostheses, and precise human-machine interaction.
