Hand-extended noodle inspired physical conjoined-network organohydrogels with anti-freezing, high stiffness and toughness properties

Jiwei Chen et al.

Summary: To achieve excellent anti-freezing, non-drying, mechanical properties, and conductivity of polymeric materials for sensor and smart wearable devices, a new strategy of fabricating a conjoined-network organohydrogel was reported. Through a simple gelation and soaking two-step strategy with calcium chloride (CaCl2) and glycerol as solvents, the organohydrogel exhibited outstanding performance in various aspects and provided a general approach for designing hydrogels with multiple excellent properties.

Unraveling disadhesion mechanism of epoxy/CSH interface under aggressive conditions

Dongshuai Hou et al.

Summary: This study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the degradation mechanisms of the epoxy/CSH interface under different environmental exposures. It was found that water molecules weaken the interaction between the epoxy and CSH, reducing the mechanical performance of the interface. Additionally, the presence of aggressive ions accelerated the degradation process of the epoxy/CSH interface.

High strength and toughness of double physically cross-linked hydrogels composed of polyvinyl alcohol and calcium alginate

Jiwei Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a high strength and toughness double physically cross-linked (PDN) hydrogel was prepared using PVA and Alg, which exhibited improved mechanical properties after an annealing treatment. The mechanism of enhancement in mechanical properties was attributed to the increased crystallinity of PVA in the hydrogel. This method provides a general approach for improving the mechanical properties of PVA PDN hydrogels, making them promising materials for medical and biosensing applications.

Biomimetic anti-freezing polymeric hydrogels: keeping soft-wet materials active in cold environments

Yukun Jian et al.

Summary: Hydrogels, as outstanding materials, have been extensively studied for various fields of application, but their properties are compromised at sub-zero temperatures. Lowering the liquid-solid phase transition temperature is crucial for expanding their applications. Research on anti-freezing hydrogels mainly focuses on additives, polymer network modification, and future developments hold promising research directions.
