Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of Propyl-Propane-Thiosulfinate and Propyl-Propane-Thiosulfonate, Two Organosulfur Compounds from Allium cepa: In Vitro Antimicrobial Effect via the Gas Phase

Antonio Sorlozano-Puerto et al.

Summary: Propyl-propane thiosulfinate (PTS) and propyl-propane thiosulfonate (PTSO) derived from Allium cepa showed antimicrobial activity, with PTSO being more effective than PTS against yeasts. The gaseous phase of both compounds could inhibit bacterial and yeast growth, displaying a concentration gradient and generating growth inhibition zones. These results suggest the potential of PTS and PTSO in human therapy.

Allium-Based Phytobiotic Enhances Egg Production in Laying Hens through Microbial Composition Changes in Ileum and Cecum

Miguel Rabelo-Ruiz et al.

Summary: Phytobiotics are emerging as one of the promising alternatives to antibiotics in poultry and livestock. In this study, a garlic and onion-based product added to the diet of laying hens at the onset of their productive life significantly increased egg production and size, accompanied by positive changes in gut microbiota. These results suggest the potential benefits of using these compounds in poultry for short periods.

Application of garlic allelochemicals improves growth and induces defense responses in eggplant (Solanum melongena) against Verticillium dahliae

Muhammad Ali et al.

Summary: The study showed that aqueous garlic extracts and garlic allelochemical diallyl disulfide can enhance eggplant seedlings' defense against Verticillium dahliae by activating antioxidant enzymes, increasing chlorophyll content, altering the photosynthesis system, and accumulating plant hormones. The treated plants exhibited a lower disease severity index and were able to successfully encounter pathogen attacks, showing potential for garlic-derived bioactive compounds to improve plant growth and defense responses in protected horticultural environments.
