Phase Separation and Multibody Effects in Three-Dimensional Active Brownian Particles

Francesco Turci et al.

Summary: Simulation studies on repulsive active Brownian particles in three dimensions show that the phase diagram includes a region of motility-induced phase separation, surrounded by a gas-crystal phase separation region. Near-critical loci and structural crossovers similar to simple fluids can be identified. Additionally, the emergence of multi-body effects at high number density is shown to be the driving force behind phase separation, rather than insufficiently attractive pair potentials.

Direct Correlation Function of a Crystalline Solid

S. -C. Lin et al.

Summary: Direct correlation functions play a fundamental role in statistical mechanics, particularly in ordered phases. Through a demanding numerical approach, the DCF of a solid has been explicitly calculated for the first time, providing new insights into the elastic constants. It was found that the DCF of a solid significantly differs from its liquid counterpart at coexistence, mainly due to the influence of vacancies.

How Activity Landscapes Polarize Microswimmers without Alignment Forces

Nicola Andreas Soeker et al.

Summary: Active-particle suspensions exhibit distinct polarization-density patterns in activity landscapes even in the absence of anisotropic particle interactions. This polarization without alignment forces is at play in motility-induced phase separation and does not exert pressure onto the bulk. The observations are quantitatively explained by an analytical theory that can guide the analysis of more complex geometries and many-body effects.

Polarization-density patterns of active particles in motility gradients

Sven Auschra et al.

Summary: The study investigates the colocalization of density modulations and particle polarization in motile active matter, utilizing an active-Brownian-particle model to derive precise analytical expressions for a single Janus-type swimmer near an abrupt activity step. The results align well with measurement data and can be applied to various complex scenarios related to motility-induced phase separation or physical boundary studies. The fundamental physics behind the formal results is effectively explained using a schematic two-species run-and-tumble model.

Fundamental measure theory of inhomogeneous two-body correlation functions

S. M. Tschopp et al.

Summary: For the three-dimensional hard-sphere model, analytical formulas for the Hankel and Legendre transforms of the inhomogeneous two-body direct correlation function have been provided for cases with either planar or spherical density symmetry. These results, combined with the Ornstein-Zernike relation, enable rapid calculation of inhomogeneous hard-sphere density correlations in real space, providing valuable information about the packing structures of the system and serving as essential components for perturbation theories of more realistic models.
