Analysis of carbon-based nanomaterials using Raman spectroscopy: principles and case studies

Debmalya Roy et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy has become a powerful non-invasive method for material characterization, particularly in the study of carbon nanomaterials. The technique allows for in-depth understanding of the behavior of electrons and phonons in carbon nanomaterials, providing structural and electronic information at various length scales.

Crosstalk between MicroRNA and Oxidative Stress in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Saray Tabak et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a key role in the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), damaging trabecular meshwork cells and inducing apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells. Certain microRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as potential therapeutic targets for regulating inflammatory and degenerative processes in POAG patients, offering promise for lowering or preventing oxidative stress injury.

Enhancement of Antimicrobial Activity of Alginate Films with a Low Amount of Carbon Nanofibers (0.1% w/w)

Isaias Sanmartin-Santos et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that neat calcium alginate films partly inactivated a non-enveloped virus, and the addition of an extremely low percentage of carbon nanofibers significantly enhanced its antiviral activity. These novel calcium alginate/carbon nanofibers composites also exhibited antibacterial properties and showed no cytotoxic effects in human cells, making them promising as broad-spectrum antimicrobial biomaterials for the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Carbon-Based Nanomaterials: Promising Antiviral Agents to Combat COVID-19 in the Microbial-Resistant Era

Angel Serrano-Aroca et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need for therapeutic options for COVID-19, caused by the highly pathogenic SARS-CoV-2, particularly for viral pneumonia and respiratory distress syndrome. Current treatments have limited efficacy, and antibiotic resistance in pneumonia treatment is escalating rapidly. Carbon-based nanomaterials show promise as alternative therapeutics with their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and low risk of resistance.

Multi-Layer Graphene Oxide in Human Keratinocytes: Time-Dependent Cytotoxicity, Proliferation, and Gene Expression

Beatriz Salesa et al.

Summary: The study revealed that multi-layer graphene oxide shows time-concentration dependence and has potential biomedical applications in human keratinocyte cells. Compared to few-layer graphene oxide, multi-layer graphene oxide at non-cytotoxic concentrations had positive effects on gene expression in HaCaT cells.

Nanonutraceuticals: Anti-Cancer Activity and Improved Safety of Chemotherapy by Costunolide and Its Nanoformulation against Colon and Breast Cancer

Ali H. El-Far et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that costunolide (COS) has significant inhibitory effects on the viability of colon and breast cancer cell lines, and exerts its anticancer effects by regulating apoptotic protein levels. Furthermore, COS and its nanoparticles (COS-NPs) in combination with doxorubicin (DOX) can effectively suppress tumor growth.
