Slip-twinning interdependent activation across phase boundaries: An in-situ investigation of a Ti-Al-V-Fe (α plus β) alloy

Shaolou Wei et al.

Summary: Microstructural plastic strain distribution evolution is highly heterogeneous even in single-phase alloys. The transfer of slip/twinning across grain/phase boundaries plays a crucial role in governing this heterogeneity. Understanding of the fundamentals of transfer across grain boundaries has received significant attention, while knowledge about phase boundaries remains relatively limited.

Summary: By adjusting the Fe content, the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Zr-xFe biomedical titanium alloys can be changed to enhance hardness and tensile strength. In addition, alloys with the addition of 4 and 5 wt % Fe exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, demonstrating their potential as biomedical materials.

Summary: The influence of partial substitution of vanadium with iron and the reduction of aluminium content on the microstructure and hardness of low-cost alpha + beta titanium alloys was evaluated. The hardness of the low-cost alloys increased with iron content, but was still inferior to commercial Ti-6Al-4V alloy.
