Effect of Regional Long-Term Care Service Supply on Choice of Care Arrangement in Old Age

Matthias Kuppler et al.

Summary: This article investigates the impact of county-level supply of inpatient and outpatient long-term care services on the individual choices of older persons in receiving long-term care. The study finds that higher inpatient service supply increases the likelihood of older persons entering institutional care, while higher outpatient service supply increases the likelihood of older persons choosing outpatient care in the community. These findings highlight the importance of considering the supply of long-term care services at the county level when designing equitable and cost-effective LTC systems.
