Experimental and numerical investigation on the complex behaviour of the localised seismic response in a multi-storey plan-asymmetric structure

Zeshan Alam et al.

Summary: Asymmetric structures are more vulnerable to seismic damage compared to symmetric structures, mainly due to coupled torsional vibrations that induce twisting in structural floors and increase shear demands in the corner column. Consequently, investigating this damage concentration is crucial to prevent seismic failure.

Influence of freeze-thaw cycles on microstructure and hydraulic conductivity of saline intact loess

Jian Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of freeze-thaw cycles on the microstructure and hydraulic conductivity of saline intact loess specimens. Results suggest that the void ratio and hydraulic conductivity of saline intact loess increase after F-T cycles or at higher salt contents, consistent with changes in porosity. An empirical relationship between hydraulic conductivity and void ratio was proposed, and the calculated data aligned well with measured data, establishing the validity of the proposed equation.

Seismic behavior of an innovative hybrid beam-column connection for precast concrete structures

M. Ye et al.

Summary: An innovative hybrid beam-column connection with hierarchy of strong connection and weak structural members for precast concrete structures is proposed in this study, which shows comparable mechanical performance with cast-in-site connections. Experimental and numerical studies have been conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of the proposed connection, and the effects of different parameters on the performance have been analyzed.

Summary: This research aims to develop a finite element model to provide data for constructing P-I diagram to mitigate blast hazards in FRP strengthened RC columns. Numerical simulations were conducted to compare the structural behavior of un-strengthened and FRP strengthened RC columns under blast loads, showing that FRP strengthening is an effective way to increase blast resistance capacity.

Hardened properties and durability of large-scale 3D printed cement-based materials

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties and void distribution of large-scale 3D printed cement-based materials. The results show that 3DPC has higher strength and better resistance to some degradation mechanisms, but lower resistance to others. Voids in 3DPC are strongly oriented along the printing direction and more interconnected, leading to anisotropy in material performance.

Revealing the doping mechanism of barium in sulfoaluminate cement clinker phases

Jianping Zhu et al.

Summary: Ba ions preferentially incorporate into the mineral C(4)A(3)(S) over bar by substituting Ca atoms, rather than entering the other two minerals. This doping preference is attributed to the efficiency of newly formed bonds, which is enhanced by electronic structure matching and small local distortions.

Assessment of FRP-Concrete Interfacial Debonding with Coupled Mixed-Mode Cohesive Zone Model

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study analyzes the mixed-mode debonding of the FRP-concrete interface using a cohesive zone model derived from the modified Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion. The research provides a detailed description of the initial debonding and propagation of the interface, as well as a clear understanding of the mixed-mode loading-dependent debonding process through parametric studies. The proposed model offers an effective and efficient way to analyze the mixed-mode debonding of the FRP-concrete interface.

Summary: A new method for fatigue peeling/shear of externally bonded carbon fiber-reinforced polymer laminates with RC under the CZM mixed-mode implementation is proposed. The numerical simulations conducted in the study show excellent agreement with experimental results, demonstrating the method's effectiveness as a predictive tool in predicting peeling/shear propagation during loading.

Probing the exact form and doping preference of magnesium in ordinary Portland cement clinker phases: A study from experiments and DFT simulations

Ruiqi Zhao et al.

Summary: The systematic study on the existence form and doping behaviors of magnesium in ordinary Portland cement (OPC) clinker reveals that MgO incorporates into the clinker phases as substitutional solid solutions and periclase. The results also show a substitution preference in C3S and C(3)A over C2S, with different substitution mechanisms identified in different phases. The low solubility of magnesium in OPC clinker is determined by large structure distortions and sharp increase in formation energies with increasing MgO content.

Biochar from waste biomass as hygroscopic filler for pervious concrete to improve evaporative cooling performance

Kanghao Tan et al.

Summary: The addition of BC particles had little impact on the emissivity and porosity of pervious concrete, but significantly reduced the albedo. Carbonaceous particles with abundant micro-pores and higher specific surface area could enhance the water absorption and retention capability of pervious concrete. Using 5.0% pulverized BC as the admixture maximally increased the total water absorption of pervious concrete.
