Predicting 2-Day Mortality of Thrombocytopenic Patients Based on Clinical Laboratory Data Using Machine Learning

Frank Lien et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that machine learning models can provide more accurate identification of critical thrombocytopenic patients compared to traditional notification systems. The research shows that models using logistic regression, random forest, artificial neural network, and stochastic gradient descent achieved high average AUC values. Random forest model performed the best, with higher sensitivity and total positive predictions, significantly outperforming other models.

Summary: This study demonstrated the positive effect of reflective testing on the adequacy of management in primary care patients. The intervention group, where general practitioners received additional tests with interpretative comments, showed a significantly higher proportion of adequate management actions compared to the control group.

Use of machine learning to predict clinical decision support compliance, reduce alert burden, and evaluate duplicate laboratory test ordering alerts

Jason M. Baron et al.

Summary: This study aimed to reduce clinician alert burden by developing machine learning models to predict clinician compliance with CDS alerts. Factors such as patient variables and prior test results were found to impact alert compliance, and the best-performing predictive model achieved an accuracy of 0.82 in predicting alert compliance. Deploying predictive models to target CDS alerts may substantially reduce clinician alert burden while maintaining most or all the CDS benefit.

Clinicians' and laboratory medicine specialists' views on laboratory demand management: a survey in nine European countries

Mercedes Ibarz et al.

Summary: The results of the study demonstrate the importance of appropriate use of laboratory testing in medical practice, as inappropriate use can lead to delayed diagnosis and increased healthcare costs. The survey shows that European laboratory specialists and clinicians are open to improving the appropriate use of laboratory testing through collaboration and shared activities.
