Designing topographically textured microparticles for induction and modulation of osteogenesis in mesenchymal stem cell engineering

Mahetab H. Amer et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of using microparticles as modulating moieties of osteogenic response through exploiting their architectural features. Cells cultured on topographically textured microparticles exhibit notably increased expression of osteogenic markers compared to conventional smooth microparticles, with significantly altered gene expression and metabolic profiles observed in vivo. This highlights how tailoring topographical design offers cell-instructive 3D microenvironments for manipulating stem cell fate without the use of exogenous osteoinductive factors.

Effect of the immune responses induced by implants in a integrated three-dimensional micro-nano topography on osseointegration

Yun Yang et al.

Summary: This study focused on exploring the immunomodulatory and bone formation-promoting capabilities of an integrated three-dimensional micro-nano topography on titanium sheets. Through surface characterization and in vitro experiments, it was found that the micro-nano topography improved hydrophilicity, promoted cell proliferation, and induced anti-inflammatory effects by polarizing macrophages. Additionally, the topography facilitated osteoblast secretion of bone morphogenetic protein-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor, providing a theoretical basis for implant osteointegration and clinical treatment.
