Hydrochar and pyrochar for sorption of pollutants in wastewater and exhaust gas: A critical review

Ziyun Liu et al.

Summary: Biochar, a sustainable adsorbent derived from abundant bio-wastes, can be used for the sorption of pollutants in wastewater and exhaust gases. This study compares and discusses the adsorption performance of pyrochar and hydrochar, including preparation procedures, sorption mechanisms, and physiochemical properties. Challenges and perspectives for designing efficient and environmentally friendly biochar-based adsorbents are also addressed.

Enhanced elemental mercury removal via chlorine-based hierarchically porous biochar with CaCO3 as template

Qiqi Shi et al.

Summary: Mercury emission from coal-fired flue gas poses a threat to the environment, prompting the development of more effective and affordable sorbents as alternatives to commercial activated carbon for mercury removal. In this study, a hierarchical porous biochar was prepared through co-pyrolysis of waste rice straw and polyvinyl chloride with CaCO3, exhibiting over 90% capture performance for Hg-0. The high efficiency of the sorbent can be attributed to the synergistic effect of high chlorine-containing active sites and developed hierarchically pores.

A review: Comparison of multi-air-pollutant removal by advanced oxidation processes - Industrial implementation for catalytic oxidation processes

Ben Wang et al.

Summary: Integrated pollutant removal technology, especially the Fenton-based method, has shown advantages in operation cost and application prospect compared to traditional methods such as wet flue gas desulfurization and selective catalytic reduction. The research in this area focuses on the catalytic mechanism of different metal-element doping catalysts for multi-air-pollutant removal. The industrialization prospects and feasibility of Fenton-based methods have been systematically analyzed in this paper, providing insights for future applications in pollutant removal.

Experimental and kinetic study on Hg0 removal by microwave/hydrogen peroxide modified seaweed-based porous biochars

Wei Yang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the control of mercury emissions in flue gas using seaweed-derived porous biochars, finding that microwave activation/hydrogen peroxide treatment increases oxygen content and aids in Hg-0 removal. Porous biochars modified with 30% hydrogen peroxide exhibit the best performance at 120 degrees C.
