Establishment of CRISPR/Cas9 mediated targeted mutagenesis in hop (Humulus lupulus)

Praveen Awasthi et al.

Summary: CRISPR/Cas9-based targeted genome editing has been successfully applied in hop for the first time, using the visible endogenous marker gene phytoene desaturase (PDS) to demonstrate successful genome editing. The study achieved efficient genome editing in hop by targeting the PDS gene, leading to mutations that disrupted the gene function and affected plant characteristics. This research highlights the potential of using CRISPR/Cas9 system to overcome challenges in traits improvement in economically important crops like hop.

Recycling nutrient-rich hop leaves by composting with wheat straw and farmyard manure in suitable mixtures

Sandra Afonso et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that mixing hop leaves with cow manure for composting can effectively enhance the utilization value of organic resources. However, composting with leaf and straw mixtures in ratios lower than 2:1 may result in immature compost that should be avoided. In practice, increasing the leaf/straw ratio as much as possible is recommended to improve compost quality.

A new perspective of a well-recognized raw material: Phenolic content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities and α- and β-acids profile of Brazilian hop (Humulus lupulus L.) extracts

Tarsila Rodrigues Arruda et al.

Summary: Brazilian hops are rich in flavonoids and phenolic compounds, especially the Canastra cultivar. They exhibit significant antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, particularly against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as antifungal activity against Byssochlamys nivea. The high content of alpha- and beta-acids in Brazilian hops suggests their potential application in pharmaceutical and food industries.
