Phytochemicals of ethanolic extract and essential oil ofPersicaria hydropiperand their potential as antibacterial agents for food packaging polylactic acid film

Nurain Aziman et al.

Summary: This study identified the phytochemicals and antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract and essential oil of Persicaria hydropiper, highlighting their potential as antibacterial agents in polylactic acid (PLA) film. The findings showed effective antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella Typhimurium at different concentrations and time intervals, with incorporation in PLA film enhancing the antibacterial effect against S. aureus. These results confirm the potential use of P. hydropiper ethanolic extract and essential oil as antibacterial agents in biodegradable PLA film.

Phytotoxic Effects of Plant Essential Oils: A Systematic Review and Structure-Activity Relationship Based on Chemometric Analyses

Ahmed M. Abd-ElGawad et al.

Summary: This review discusses the phytotoxic essential oils (EOs) and their chemical compositions reported from 1972 to 2020, highlighting the importance of oxygenated terpenes, mono- and sesquiterpenes in the phytotoxicity of EOs. Monoterpenes such as pinene, 1,8 cineole, linalool, and carvacrol, as well as sesquiterpenes like caryophyllene and its derivatives, are identified as key components in the phytotoxicity of EOs. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the pure form activities, determine field application, assess safety, and understand modes of action for these compounds.

Essential Oil of Deverra tortuosa Aerial Parts: Detailed Chemical Profile, Allelopathic, Antimicrobial, and Antioxidant Activities

Eman M. Fayed et al.

Summary: This study conducted a detailed analysis of the essential oil extracted from the aerial parts of Deverra tortuosa, revealing its significant allelopathic, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities. The major compounds identified in the essential oil contributed to these bioactivities, making it a promising environmentally-friendly bioherbicide and potential food preservative. Further research is recommended to characterize the major compounds and evaluate their singular or synergistic activities for efficiency and biosafety assessment.

Allelopathy in rice: a story of momilactones, kin recognition, and weed management

Nuria Serra Serra et al.

Summary: Allelopathy is a biochemical process where some plant species have evolved to inhibit the growth of neighboring plants in order to secure nutrient access and outperform competitors. Rice synthesizes momilactones, diterpenoids that inhibit the growth of numerous plant species, but many questions remain unresolved regarding their biosynthesis, exudation, and biological activity. Further research is needed to understand when and how momilactones are produced and how they act in plant cells.

Microbiota modulation of allelopathy depends on litter chemistry: Mitigation or exacerbation?

Giuliano Bonanomi et al.

Summary: The study revealed that microbial communities play a role in modulating the allelopathic effects of leaf litter decomposition, with decomposed litter showing reduced allelopathic effects on plant root growth compared to freshly fallen litter. In non-sterile conditions, living microbiota can both mitigate and exacerbate the allelopathic effects of leaf litter, with mitigation being more frequent and intense in stressful conditions. Specific bacterial and fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified as potentially involved in mediating the litter allelopathic effect.
