Sex differences in condition dependence of natal dispersal in a large herbivore: dispersal propensity and distance are decoupled

A. J. M. Hewison et al.

Summary: Our study found that in roe deer, there is a correlation between body mass and dispersal propensity in males, whereas no such correlation was found in females; however, dispersal distance showed a positive relationship with body mass in both sexes with no significant difference.

A standardisation framework for bio-logging data to advance ecological research and conservation

Ana M. M. Sequeira et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of a standardization framework to ensure discoverability, interoperability, and effective translation of bio-logging data for addressing global conservation challenges. By using simple templates and automated procedures, data can be transformed into four standardized levels, facilitating data sharing, interoperability, accuracy-of-use, rightful attribution, and data preservation security. Adoption of this framework will support the collection of Essential Ocean Variables and inter-governmental assessments, and establish a starting point for broader efforts in establishing interoperable bio-logging data formats across all fields in animal ecology.

Climate change and anthropogenic food manipulation interact in shifting the distribution of a large herbivore at its altitudinal range limit

Julius G. Bright Ross et al.

Summary: This study utilized relocation datasets of Eurasian roe deer to show that scarce snow cover and increased feeding site distribution interacted to elevate the elevation of winter range limits, a trend predicted to continue under climate change. Additionally, roe deer have shifted their feeding site usage from deep snow conditions historically to a wider range of snow conditions contemporarily, resulting in reduced inter-annual variability in space use patterns during specific months.

Survival and cause-specific mortality of European wildcat (Felis silvestris) across Europe

Matteo Luca Bastianelli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the annual survival and cause-specific mortality of the European wildcat, finding that human-caused mortalities, such as roadkill and poaching, were the main risks. The research showed that road density strongly impacted wildcat annual survival, with motorways and primary roads posing the highest risk. These findings provide important information for conservation planning and highlight the need to maintain subcritical road densities in key wildcat habitats.
