A tsunamigenic delta collapse and its associated tsunami deposits in and around Lake Sils, Switzerland

Valentin Nigg et al.

Summary: Large lacustrine mass movements and delta collapses are considered potential tsunamigenic sources and hazardous for lakeshore populations and infrastructure. This study combines sedimentological investigation, mineralogical fingerprinting, and numerical tsunami modeling to test the hypothesis of a tsunamigenic delta collapse in Lake Sils. The results suggest that the historically undocumented Isola Delta collapse generated a basin-wide tsunami inundating the lakeshore and transporting large amounts of unconsolidated sediment.

Seismic control of large prehistoric rockslides in the Eastern Alps

Patrick Oswald et al.

Summary: The study suggests that severe earthquakes triggered large prehistoric rockslides in the Eastern Alps, with preceding seismic activity potentially weakening the rock slopes leading up to the events. This highlights the role of seismicity in preparing and triggering catastrophic rockslides in the region, shedding light on the relationship between earthquakes and large rockslides in clustered environments.

Numerical simulation of impulse wave generation by idealized landslides with OpenFOAM

M. Rauter et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of multiphase Navier-Stokes Equations in impulse wave generation and conducted thorough experimental and simulation comparisons, finding consistency between simulated results and experimental data under specific conditions. Through sensitivity analysis and parameter studies, it was found that the first wave crest can be estimated by landslide mass in this scenario, while other properties related to landslide momentum have minimal impact on predictive accuracy.
