Using climate reanalysis data in conjunction with multi-temporal satellite thermal imagery to derive supraglacial debris thickness changes from energy-balance modelling

Rebecca L. Stewart et al.

Summary: Surface energy-balance models are used with satellite thermal imagery to estimate supraglacial debris thickness, and our study shows that regional reanalysis data can be used to derive debris thickness for mountain glaciers. Significant changes in debris thickness were observed at glacier termini and margins of expanding debris cover, highlighting the versatility and spatiotemporal application of this methodology.

Supraglacial Ice Cliffs Can Substantially Increase the Mass Loss of Debris-Covered Glaciers

Pascal Buri et al.

Summary: This study utilized a process-based model to calculate the impact of ice cliffs on the mass balance of all glaciers in a Himalayan catchment, revealing that the ice cliffs lead to higher thinning rates of debris-covered glacier tongues than expected, and underestimating glacier ice mass loss if not considered. Ice cliffs enhance melt in areas where other processes would suppress it, such as at high elevations or where debris is thick, and contribute significantly to glacier mass loss if oriented north.

Ice Cliff Dynamics of Debris-Covered Trakarding Glacier in the Rolwaling Region, Nepal Himalaya

Yota Sato et al.

Summary: Ice cliffs on debris-covered glaciers can act as hot spots for melt, promoting local glacier mass loss. Repeat high-resolution remote sensing data are essential to monitor ice cliff dynamics. This study analyzed high-resolution aerial photogrammetry data to delineate the morphology, distribution, and temporal changes of ice cliffs on the Trakarding Glacier in eastern Nepal Himalaya. Results showed areas with denser ice cliff distribution experienced significant surface lowering, with approximately 15% of ice cliff area replaced by new ice cliffs.

Understanding Complex Debris-Covered Glaciers: Concepts, Issues, and Research Directions

Da Huo et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the complexity of debris-covered glacier systems, emphasizing the importance of understanding system couplings and feedbacks, and providing insights into controlling factors and glacial processes. The study finds that climate forcing, properties and transport of debris, topography, and supraglacial water bodies are key controlling factors in debris-covered glacier systems.

Continuous borehole optical televiewing reveals variable englacial debris concentrations at Khumbu Glacier, Nepal

Katie E. Miles et al.

Summary: Surface melting of High Mountain Asian debris-covered glaciers significantly affects the seasonal water supply to millions of people, with the thickness of the supraglacial debris layer playing a key role. Research on the debris-covered Khumbu Glacier in Nepal shows that englacial debris concentrations are higher near the glacier terminus compared to the mid-to-upper ablation area, complicating predictions of future rates of surface melt and debris exhumation.

Debris cover and the thinning of Kennicott Glacier, Alaska: in situ measurements, automated ice cliff delineation and distributed melt estimates

Leif S. Anderson et al.

Summary: The study quantified the melt across the debris-covered tongue of Kennicott Glacier, revealing that ice cliffs contribute 26% of total melt across the glacier tongue. Despite the significant importance of ice cliffs to area-average melt, the absolute area-averaged melt is dominated by debris.
