Effect of educational intervention on the appropriate use of oral antimicrobials in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a retrospective secondary data analysis

Junya Kusumoto et al.

Summary: Following an educational intervention, there was a significant decrease in the prescription of oral third-generation cephalosporins in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kobe University Hospital. However, there was an increase in the use of penicillins among outpatients. Additionally, a decrease in the use of macrolides and quinolones was observed in outpatients. Despite changes in the pattern of antibiotic prescription, there was no significant increase in the prevalence of surgical site infections or adverse effects of drugs in inpatients undergoing mandibular third molar extraction between 2013 and 2018.
