Carbon footprint and water footprint of rice and wheat production in Punjab, India

Durba Kashyap et al.

Summary: This study quantified the carbon and water footprints of rice and wheat production in five agro-climatic zones of Punjab, India, revealing that rice and wheat had respective carbon footprints of 8.80 and 4.18 t CO(2)eq/ha. Nitrogen fertilizer use was identified as a major hotspot for carbon footprint mitigation, with large farms having lower carbon footprints per tonne compared to small farms.

Energy and water footprints of cereal production in China

Yijie Zhai et al.

Summary: This study conducted an energy and water footprint analysis of cereal production in China, focusing on wheat, maize, and rice. It found that rice production had a significantly higher water footprint compared to maize and wheat, and agricultural economic effect was the largest driving factor in promoting environmental burdens. Effective measures such as optimizing plantation structure and implementing rational agricultural management practices are recommended for achieving resource-saving and ecofriendly agricultural development.

Substitution of beef with pea protein reduces the environmental footprint of meat balls whilst supporting health and climate stabilisation goals

Sophie Saget et al.

Summary: The study found that plant-based meat analogues made from peas have lower environmental burdens in production and consumption compared to traditional beef products, with global warming, acidification, and land use burdens at least 85%, 81%, and 89% smaller, respectively. Additionally, PPBs have higher nutritional density, resulting in considerably lower environmental footprints per unit of nutrition.

The co-benefits for food carbon footprint and overweight and obesity from dietary adjustments in China

Lan Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that dietary substitutions could reduce the probability of obesity/overweight, for example, replacing milk for eggs could reduce the probability by 31%, substituting vegetables for beef could reduce 2.65 kg CO(2)e per year, and replacing milk for mutton could reduce the probability and CO(2)e emissions by 28% and 1.85 kg per year, respectively.

The carbon footprint of dietary guidelines around the world: a seven country modeling study

Brittany Kovacs et al.

Summary: The environmental impacts of national food-based dietary guidelines vary significantly around the world, with the US guidelines having the highest carbon footprint, 4.5 times that of India. Understanding the carbon footprints of different recommendations can assist in future decision-making to incorporate environmental sustainability in dietary guidance.

International Analysis of the Nutritional Content and a Review of Health Benefits of Non-Dairy Plant-Based Beverages

Winston J. Craig et al.

Summary: This study examined the nutritional content and health profile of plant-based non-dairy beverages from three continents, finding that they generally have low levels of sodium, saturated fat, and calories. However, protein, vitamin D, and vitamin B12 fortification levels varied significantly among different types of beverages.

Urban agriculture may change food consumption towards low carbon diets

Ivanka Puigdueta et al.

Summary: This study found that changes in food habits of citizens involved in urban gardening activities can lead to a potential reduction in individual carbon footprint, especially through reduced consumption of animal source foods. The results indicate that urban gardening activities could serve as social catalysts for promoting pro-environmental behavior and mitigating greenhouse gases in urban areas.
