Mangrove ecological services at the forefront of coastal change in the French overseas territories

Ewan Tregarot et al.

Summary: Mangroves are highly valuable in French overseas territories, providing ecosystem services in carbon sequestration, coastal protection, water purification, and fish biomass production. However, they are vulnerable to various stressors and the study highlights the importance of increased investment in their protection to maintain their services.

Fine root biomass and its contribution to the mangrove communities in three saline zones of Sundarbans, Bangladesh

Shamim Ahmed et al.

Summary: The study focused on the influence of salinity and differences in forest structure on fine root biomass (FRB) and carbon stocks in the Sundarbans mangrove forest in Bangladesh. Results showed variations in forest structural parameters and diversity indices with salinity changes, with carbon stocks decreasing with increasing salinity in different zones. Fine root biomass also decreased with soil depth, but not significantly among layers.

Endophytic Bacterial Isolates From Halophytes Demonstrate Phytopathogen Biocontrol and Plant Growth Promotion Under High Salinity

Christos A. Christakis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of halophytic endophytes from crop wild relatives to improve crop adaptations to various stresses, including salinity tolerance, growth promotion, and phytopathogen antagonistic activities. The researchers identified 115 endophytic isolates, three of which showed in-planta suppression of the phytopathogen Verticillium growth. Genomes of selected isolates were sequenced and three novel species were identified, suggesting the potential use of these endophytes as bio-inoculants for enhancing crop growth and stress tolerance, particularly in high-salinity conditions.

Biological control of onion basal rot disease using phosphate solubilising rhizobacteria

Idris Bektas et al.

Summary: Research showed that phosphate solubilising bacteria (PSB) can effectively control onion basal rot, reducing disease severity and providing an effective method for onion cultivation. Further investigation into the biochemical basis of their activity against FOC is recommended.
