Asynchronicity of endemic and emerging mosquito-borne disease outbreaks in the Dominican Republic

Mary E. Petrone et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the temporal and spatial patterns of chikungunya, Zika, and dengue outbreaks reported in the Dominican Republic between 2012 and 2018. The research found that emerging disease outbreaks were robust to the climatological and spatio-temporal constraints defining seasonal dengue outbreak dynamics, indicating the need for constant surveillance to prevent future health crises.

Evidence for current circulation of an ancient West Nile virus strain (NY99) in Brazil

Marcio Junio Lima Siconelli et al.

Summary: In Brazil, the first cases of West Nile virus infection in horses were reported in 2018, with this study detailing cases from Ceara and Espirito Santo states in 2019. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the isolates belong to lineage 1a, clustering with the NY99 strain that has not circulated in the USA since 2005. These findings suggest that West Nile virus has been silently circulating in Brazil for many years.

Serosurvey of West Nile virus (WNV) in free-ranging raptors from Brazil

Ana Paula Morel et al.

Summary: This study in Southern Brazil sampled 200 wild raptors, finding that 5% of the birds tested positive for WNV antibodies, while no Flavivirus RNA was detected. The results highlight the need for ongoing surveillance for emerging flaviviruses in Brazil and contingency policies for outbreaks in high-risk areas.
