Participation of two sRNA RyhB homologs from the fish pathogen Yersinia ruckeri in bacterial physiology

Lillian G. Acuna et al.

Summary: Small noncoding RNAs, such as RyhB, play vital roles in gene expression and physiology regulation in bacteria. In this study, two RyhB homologs, RyhB-1 and RyhB-2, were identified and characterized in the fish pathogen Yersinia ruckeri. Despite similar expression patterns under iron starvation, mutant strains lacking RyhB-1 or RyhB-2 exhibited distinct phenotypes, indicating non-redundant roles in modulating bacterial physiology.

Impact of bacterial persisters on their host

Ana L. Moldoveanu et al.

Summary: The rise of antibiotic failure is a significant threat to global health, which is not only driven by stable antibiotic resistance but also by a subpopulation of transiently non-growing, antibiotic tolerant bacteria known as 'persisters'. Recent advances in the field have revealed the complex nature of persisters, highlighting their high adaptability through biosynthetic activity, contributing to the evolution of antimicrobial resistance and modulation of host immune responses despite clinically effective treatment.

Optimized expression of Hfq protein increases Escherichia coli growth

Phuong N. L. Vo et al.

Summary: Escherichia coli is a commonly used platform for metabolic engineering due to its fast growth and established techniques. By optimizing the expression level of the Hfq protein, researchers were able to increase the growth rate and cell density of E. coli, along with the upregulation of stress response genes and metabolic genes. This optimization strategy could potentially be applied to other bacterial species to construct faster-growing strains.

RNA binding of Hfq monomers promotes RelA-mediated hexamerization in a limiting Hfq environment

Pallabi Basu et al.

Summary: RelA-mediated Hfq hexamerization requires the initial binding of RNA to Hfq monomers, and by interacting with sRNA, RelA promotes the assembly of Hfq monomers into hexamers.

The Small RNA RyhB Homologs from Salmonella Typhimurium Restrain the Intracellular Growth and Modulate the SPI-1 Gene Expression within RAW264.7 Macrophages

Diego Penaloza et al.

Summary: The sRNAs RyhB-1 and RyhB-2 from S. Typhimurium play vital roles in bacterial infection by regulating intracellular survival, replication, metabolic status, and gene expression associated with Salmonella pathogenicity. Additionally, they directly interact with key bacterial genes, contributing to virulence modulation inside macrophages.
