Distinction between Cr and other heavy-metal-resistant bacteria involved in C/N cycling in contaminated soils of copper producing sites

Juan Zhang et al.

Summary: Through studying typical copper-producing provinces in China, it was found that 90% of sampling sites were heavily polluted with multiple heavy metals, while soil heterogeneity and mutual interference of multimetals are obstacles in exploring bacterial resistance pathways in contaminated field soils. By analyzing contamination indices and bioindicators, along with multivariate statistical models, it was discovered that different types of heavy metals affect antioxidant enzyme activity, urease-induced precipitation of heavy metals, and excretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the soil.

Phosphate-Arsenic Interactions in Halophilic Microorganisms of the Microbial Mat from Laguna Tebenquiche: from the Microenvironment to the Genomes

L. A. Saona et al.

Summary: Arsenic plays a key role in the microbial mat ecosystem of Andean valleys, with a significant weight percentage compared to phosphorus. Low phosphate concentration can drastically alter the microbial community in the presence of high salinity and arsenic concentrations. Microorganisms isolated from the microbial mat showed high resistance to arsenate, even under low phosphate concentration, with key genes related to arsenic and phosphate metabolism in their genomes.

Community-led, integrated, reproducible multi-omics with anvi'o

A. Murat Eren et al.

Summary: In microbiology, there is an abundance of big data, but the workflows designed to interpret the data may constrain the biological questions that can be asked. Anvi'o, a community-led multi-omics platform, is maturing into an open software ecosystem that reduces constraints in 'omics data analyses.

Arsenic and antimony co-contamination influences on soil microbial community composition and functions: Relevance to arsenic resistance and carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling

Yongbin Li et al.

Summary: This study explored the adaptability and response of soil microbiome to As and Sb co-contamination in two contrasting sites within the Shimen realgar mine, indicating that geochemical parameters play a key role in shaping community composition and metabolic potentials. Certain bacteria were predicted to be tolerant to high concentrations of As and Sb, and co-occurrence network analysis revealed that genes related to C fixation, nitrate/nitrite reduction, N fixation, and sulfate reduction were positively correlated with As and Sb fractions.
