Off-line multidimensional high performance thin-layer chromatography for fractionation of Japanese knotweed rhizome bark extract and isolation of flavan-3-ols, proanthocyanidins and anthraquinones

Urska Jug et al.

Summary: A methodology based on f-line multidimensional thin-layer chromatography was developed for the isolation of secondary metabolites from Japanese knotweed rhizomes. Several compounds were isolated for the first time from this plant material, and new compounds were detected in the bark of Japanese knotweed rhizomes. HPTLC and HPTLC-MSn analyses played a key role in supporting the fractionation and isolation process.

Experimental design approach in optimization of some effective variables on quantity and quality extraction of essential oil from Rosa damascena Mill

Afsane Allahyari et al.

Summary: The study found that under different temperature and storage time conditions, a storage time of 14 days and a temperature of -5 degrees Celsius can obtain the maximum essential oil extraction yield from Rosa damascena petals. The optimum quality of essential oil is achieved when the citronellol to geraniol ratio is 1.30. Additionally, it was surprising to discover that the essential oil quality from short-term fermented petals is higher than those from fresh petals.

Detection of microalgae single -cell antioxidant and electrochemical potentials by gold microelectrode and Raman micro-spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

Mostafa Gouda et al.

Summary: This study used single-cell electrochemical analysis to investigate the impact of intracellular phenolic and flavonoid contents on the electric charge of microalgae. Results showed that certain microalgae species had significantly higher antioxidant activity compared to others, and single-cell current measurement using gold microelectrodes can verify this activity. Additionally, the study provides a simple micro-level understanding of single-cell phytochemicals, demonstrating their functional impacts and real-time evaluation during microalgae cultivation.

Effects of ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), high voltage electric field (HVEF), high pressure processing (HPP), and combined methods (HVEF plus UAE and HPP plus UAE) on Gac leaves extraction

Thi Minh Chau Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study found that Gac leaves extract is a source of valuable bioactive compounds with antioxidant activity and hypoglycemic effects that can help manage postprandial hyperglycemia. Vanillic acid and myricetin were identified as the main contributors to the inhibitory effects on alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase. The combined emerging technologies HVU and HPU were superior to other methods in terms of extraction efficiency.

Evaluation of the potential of total proanthocyanidin content in feces as an intake biomarker

Cristina Magdaleno-Tapia et al.

Summary: This study explored the use of spectrophotometric measurement of fecal proanthocyanidin (PA) content as a biomarker of PA intake. The results showed that this method proved to be a valid compliance marker in a preclinical study, but was not associated with PA intake in free-living subjects. Further validation of this method in observational studies is needed.
