Characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 positive cases beyond health-care professionals or social and health-care facilities

Giovanna Deiana et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 outbreak in Italy, concerns were raised about infection among health-care professionals and those in welfare and health-care facilities. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the general population outside of these closed communities. The analysis found that the Case Fatality Rate among the general population was lower than the overall rate of positive cases, highlighting the importance of understanding the transmission dynamics in guiding intervention policies for future pandemics.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Healthcare Professionals and General Population During First Wave of COVID-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study Conducted in Sicily, Italy

Claudio Costantino et al.

Summary: The incidence and mean age of healthcare workers infected with SARS-CoV-2 were comparable between Western Sicily and the entire country of Italy, with the majority of infections occurring in non-COVID-19 working environments. Nurses and healthcare assistants were the most frequently infected categories, indicating that healthcare workers are more susceptible to infection compared to the general population, with infections equally likely to occur in hospital and non-hospital settings. To strengthen the safety of healthcare workers in combating the COVID-19 pandemic, measures must be taken to provide adequate personal protective equipment, optimize human resources, implement closed groups of healthcare workers, establish traffic control systems, and create dedicated areas in every healthcare setting. Additionally, measures such as influenza vaccination and providing psychophysical support, including breaks during working shifts, adequate rest, and family support, must be implemented in both hospital and non-hospital settings.

Healthcare Workers' Willingness to Receive Influenza Vaccination in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Survey in Southern Italy

Gabriella Di Giuseppe et al.

Summary: This study found a significant increase in healthcare workers' willingness to receive the influenza vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic, with main determinants including belief in the usefulness of influenza vaccine in distinguishing influenza and COVID-19 symptoms, willingness to receive COVID-19 vaccination, no concern about influenza vaccine side effects, concern about transmitting influenza to patients, and previous influenza vaccination history. Strategies targeting enabling factors are essential to promote influenza vaccination adherence among healthcare workers in future seasons.
