Cardiac Regeneration: New Hope for an Old Dream

Florian Weinberger et al.

Summary: The regenerative capacity of the heart is minimal due to the lack of progenitor cell population and the inability of cardiomyocytes to re-enter the cell cycle after birth. Loss of cardiomyocytes can lead to irreversible damage and exacerbate heart failure. Advances in understanding signaling pathways and stem cell technology have provided strategies for potential generation of new myocytes, fulfilling a central criterion for heart repair.

Bispecific Antibody Inhalation Therapy for Redirecting Stem Cells from the Lungs to Repair Heart Injury

Mengrui Liu et al.

Summary: This study explores a novel approach utilizing lung resident stem cells for cardiac repair. By specifically designed antibodies, lung HSCs are redirected to the injured heart, promoting endogenous repair mechanisms. This strategy demonstrates increased cardiac function through altered repair mechanisms, and shows safety and effectiveness in a mouse model of myocardial infarction.

The Molecular Mechanisms Associated with Aerobic Exercise-Induced Cardiac Regeneration

Bing Bo et al.

Summary: Aerobic exercise plays a positive role in heart health and regeneration, although current research on its effects is not comprehensive. Complex molecular and cellular mechanisms, along with paracrine factors, transcriptional factors, signaling pathways, and microRNAs, contribute to cardiomyocyte regeneration induced by physical activity.

Injection of ROS-Responsive Hydrogel Loaded with Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor into the Pericardial Cavity for Heart Repair

Zhenhua Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a ROS-sensitive cross-linked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel was synthesized to deliver basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) for myocardial repair, showing significant therapeutic effects in protecting cardiac function, reducing fibrosis, and enhancing angiomyogenesis. Additionally, the safety and feasibility of minimally invasive injection and access into the pericardial cavity in both pigs and human patients were demonstrated.

Direct cell reprogramming: approaches, mechanisms and progress

Haofei Wang et al.

Summary: Direct reprogramming converts cells from one lineage into another without going through a pluripotent state, and it is a promising strategy for generating functional cells for therapeutic purposes. Recent advancements include using defined factors for lineage conversion, enhancing reprogrammed cell maturation, and addressing challenges in in vivo direct reprogramming for translational applications.

Cardiac Cell Therapy for Heart Repair: Should the Cells Be Left Out?

Dashuai Zhu et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death worldwide, often leading to end-stage heart failure and necessitating heart transplantation due to the lack of endogenous regenerative actions. Regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering strategies have been pursued to repair the damaged heart and restore normal function, utilizing both cellular and acellular products in combination with biomaterials. Substantial progress has been made to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying heart repair and regeneration, with potential opportunities for novel strategies in future research and clinical translation.

Exosome-eluting stents for vascular healing after ischaemic injury

Shiqi Hu et al.

Summary: Stents releasing exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells can enhance vascular healing in rats by promoting endothelial cell formation and proliferation, and inhibiting smooth muscle cell migration. Compared to drug-eluting stents and bare-metal stents, exosome-coated stents accelerate re-endothelialization and reduce restenosis.

Advances in 3D bioprinting technology for cardiac tissue engineering and regeneration

Nanbo Liu et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of death worldwide, with heart transplantation being the primary treatment for end-stage cardiovascular diseases. However, due to a shortage of heart donors, new sources of cardiac regenerative medicine are needed. Tissue engineering using bioactive materials has creatively provided a promising foundation, and 3D bioprinting technology has shown great potential in generating micro-scale cardiac tissues for cardiovascular regeneration.
