Biallelic mutations in spermatogenesis and centriole-associated 1 like (SPATC1L) cause acephalic spermatozoa syndrome and male infertility

You-Zhu Li et al.

Summary: Acephalic spermatozoa syndrome is a rare type of teratozoospermia that severely impairs the reproductive ability of male patients. This study identifies SPATC1L as a novel gene for human acephalic spermatozoa syndrome and suggests that SPATC1L defects might affect early embryonic development.

Tsga10is essential for arrangement of mitochondrial sheath and male fertility in mice

Geng Luo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that deficiency of the Tsga10 gene can lead to male infertility in mice, as TSGA10 is involved in the correct arrangement of the mitochondrial sheath in spermatozoa. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms of TSGA10 in spermatogenesis, early embryonic development, and the GnRH network.

How the centriole builds its cilium: of mothers, daughters, and the acquisition of appendages

Dhivya Kumar et al.

Summary: Centrioles are microtubule-based structures in eukaryotic cells that play crucial roles in organizing the cell's cytoskeleton and facilitating various cellular processes. One important function of centrioles is to assemble cilia, which are involved in sperm locomotion, mucus flow in the lung, and intercellular signaling. It is suggested that understanding how centrioles are remodeled to support cilium assembly could provide insights into the molecular etiologies of ciliopathies.

LINCking the Nuclear Envelope to Sperm Architecture

Francesco Manfrevola et al.

Summary: During spermatogenesis, the nuclear architecture undergoes extensive remodeling, with the LINC complex playing a key role in connecting the nucleoskeleton to the cytoskeleton and governing mechanotransduction. This complex is crucial for sperm morphological maturation and may be important in determining male fertility.

SUN5 Interacting With Nesprin3 Plays an Essential Role in Sperm Head-to-Tail Linkage: Research on Sun5 Gene Knockout Mice

Yunfei Zhang et al.

Summary: Acephalic spermatozoa syndrome is a rare genetic and reproductive disease, with SUN5 mutations found in approximately 33-47% of patients. Knockout of the Sun5 gene in mice resulted in broken head-to-tail linkage, similar to the human syndrome. Bioinformatic analysis and experimental evidence revealed that Sun5 interacts with Nesprin3 to play a crucial role in maintaining the connection between the head and tail of spermatozoa.
