Microvascular dysfunction in COVID-19: the MYSTIC study

Alexandros Rovas et al.

Summary: Our study found that COVID-19 patients have reduced microvascular density, slower red blood cell velocity, and glycocalyx damage. Elevated markers of endothelial dysfunction are associated with disease severity and can predict 60-day in-hospital mortality.

Cytokine release syndrome in COVID-19: Innate immune, vascular, and platelet pathogenic factors differ in severity of disease and sex

Aaron C. Petrey et al.

Summary: This study aims to identify pathogenic factors linked to disease severity and patient characteristics in COVID-19 patients. 16 soluble factors were found to be increased, 2 decreased, with key factors associated with severe disease and ICU admission. Levels of IL-4 and sCD40L were higher in males, and analysis revealed associations between disease severity, sex, and biomarkers.

Hyaluronidase Impairs Neutrophil Function and Promotes Group B Streptococcus Invasion and Preterm Labor in Nonhuman Primates

Michelle Coleman et al.

Summary: Invasive bacterial infections during pregnancy, such as Group B streptococci (GBS), can lead to preterm birth, stillbirth, and fetal injury. Using a nonhuman primate model, researchers found that GBS expressing hyaluronidase can cause microbial invasion into the amniotic cavity and preterm labor, shedding light on virulence factors and potential therapeutic strategies. Understanding how bacteria evade host defenses during pregnancy is crucial for developing preventive therapies against adverse outcomes.

SARS-CoV-2 Viremia is Associated With Inflammatory, But Not Cardiovascular Biomarkers, in Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19

Peder L. Myhre et al.

Summary: In COVID-19 patients, viremia is associated with increased inflammatory markers but not cardiovascular markers. Patients with viremia showed an increase in NT-proBNP and D-dimer levels from baseline to day 3.

Summary: The study observed significantly reduced levels of NO and H2S in COVID-19 patients, with higher levels in deceased patients. Free sulfide levels were found to be highly predictive of COVID-19 infection.
