Deploying 3D scanning based geometric digital twins during fabrication and assembly in offsite manufacturing

Christopher Rausch et al.

Summary: This article develops a framework for deploying and comparing three distinct geometric digital twin (gDT) approaches in offsite manufacturing. The study finds that scan-vs-BIM is the most accurate approach, parametric BIM updating produces the most semantically rich gDT, and scan-to-BIM strikes a balance between representational accuracy and semantic enrichment. Future research should focus on developing a hybrid solution of these gDT approaches.

Automatic modeling of prefabricated components with laser-scanned data for virtual trial assembly

Dongsheng Li et al.

Summary: Virtual trial assembly (VTA) simulates the preassembly by verifying the correspondence of as-built and as-designed prefabricated component models. Automatic modeling approach is desired to obtain reliable as-built PC models for improving the efficiency of VTA. This study proposes an approach to automatically reconstruct the primary structure and develop adaptive methods for detailed structure reconstruction, showing effectiveness in automatic model reconstruction of as-built PCs.
