Clinical and Biological Implications of Cancer Stem Cells in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Hiroyuki Tsuchiya et al.

Summary: HCC is a malignant tumor with poor prognosis and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Therapeutic drugs targeting novel mechanisms, such as molecular-targeted drugs and immune checkpoint inhibitors, have shown progress but the high recurrence rate remains a challenge. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are promising targets for developing novel anticancer drugs as they play key roles in tumor initiation, maintenance, recurrence, and resistance to conventional therapies, although their specific functions and roles require further clarification in understanding tumor development and progression.
