Soil seedbank: Old methods for new challenges in agroecology?

Ines Mahe et al.

Summary: The weed soil seedbank is an important component in agroecosystems, playing a key role in weed infestation and biodiversity. Research on the seedbank aims to assess weed management practices, study the relationship between seedbank and aboveground vegetation, explore seedbank composition and diversity, and quantify seedbank as wildlife food resource. The choice of methodology significantly influences seedbank estimates, with resources often dictating the approach in research studies. Innovations are needed to improve the accuracy and reliability of data obtained in soil seedbank studies.

Molecular and Physiological Responses of Rice and Weedy Rice to Heat and Drought Stress

Leonard Bonilha Piveta et al.

Summary: Rice, the staple food for many people worldwide, is affected by climatic changes impacting its yield and quality. Weedy rice, with high genetic diversity, is crucial for rice crop improvement. This study analyzed the physiological and molecular profiles of rice cultivars and weedy rice under heat and drought stress, revealing genotype-specific responses to stress conditions. Research suggests that certain genotypes perform well under stress conditions and can be used as a source of genetic diversity for rice breeding.

Allelopathic potential of Malaysian invasive weed species on Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea Roshev)

Mst Motmainna et al.

Summary: The study found that methanolic extracts of 30 Malaysian invasive weed species had varying effects on the seed survival rate and seedling growth of Weedy rice, with radicle growth being more significantly inhibited. Among the tested weed species, some showed strong allelopathic effects, indicating their potential use in developing eco-friendly herbicides.

Raman Spectroscopy Can Distinguish Glyphosate-Susceptible and -Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri)

Vijay Singh et al.

Summary: The non-judicious use of herbicides has led to the widespread evolution of herbicide resistance in various weed species, such as Palmer amaranth. Raman spectroscopy can be utilized as a rapid, non-destructive diagnostic tool to differentiate between glyphosate-resistant and -susceptible weed populations. The study demonstrates the utility of Raman spectra for evaluating herbicide resistance and stress response in plants under field conditions.

Weed Control Efficacy and Crop-Weed Selectivity of a New Bioherbicide WeedLock

Mahmudul Hasan et al.

Summary: Plant-based bioherbicide WeedLock demonstrated effective weed control and non-selectivity in both glasshouse and field conditions. Compared to chemical herbicides, WeedLock showed similar efficacy to glyphosate isopropyl-amine for Ageratum conyzoides L. and displayed sustainable weed control potential in the experiments.

Physiological and Biochemical Responses of Ageratum conyzoides, Oryza sativa f. spontanea (Weedy Rice) and Cyperus iria to Parthenium hysterophorus Methanol Extract

Mst. Motmainna et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of Parthenium hysterophorus methanol extract on different weed species. The extract showed strong phytotoxicity on Ageratum conyzoides, affecting its physiological and biochemical responses and increasing antioxidant enzyme activity. This suggests that the methanol extract of Parthenium hysterophorus has the potential to be used as an alternative to chemical herbicides.
