Imposing water deficit on modern and wild wheat collections to identify drought-resilient genotypes

Sabah M. Morsy et al.

Summary: Breeding drought-tolerant wheat is an effective way to mitigate drought effects. This study identified potentially drought-tolerant wheat genotypes through evaluating a large collection of genotypes under water deficit and well-watered conditions in Egypt. The results showed significant effects of environments, water stress, and genotypes on plant height, days to flowering, and grain yield. Under water deficit, earlier and shorter wheat genotypes tended to produce higher grain yield, while late flowering and taller genotypes performed better under well-watered conditions.

Irrigation efficiency, drain outflow and yield responses to drain depth in the Nile delta clay soil, Egypt

Mohamed K. El-Ghannam et al.

Summary: The study found that reducing drain depth significantly decreased drain outflow and water input, while increasing irrigation efficiency, seed yield, and irrigation water use efficiency. Reducing drain depth to below 40 cm is recommended to maximize water saving, though it may lead to potential salinity buildup. Careful water and soil management practices, such as periodic leaching, are essential when decreasing drain depth to prevent adverse effects on crop yield and soil quality.

Critical evaluation of functional aspects of evaporation barriers through environmental and economics lens for evaporation suppression-A review on milestones from improved technologies

Ahmed M. Abdallah et al.

Summary: Climate change models predict an increase in rainfall variability, leading to floods and drought events, intensifying the necessity for reservoirs. However, up to 50% of reservoirs' capacity is lost by evaporation, affecting water availability and stability. Various barriers have been developed to inhibit evaporation, but their efficiency, applicability, and environmental consequences are still under debate.

Super absorbent polymers mitigate drought stress in corn (Zea mays L.) grown under rainfed conditions

Ahmed M. AbdAllah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of three K-based SAPs as water reservoirs during periods of drought in humid subtropical climates. The results showed that these SAPs can reduce rainwater transport, increase soil water storage, and enhance plant growth under rainfed conditions, suggesting that SAPs soil amendment is a potential approach to mitigate drought stress.

Evaporation suppression from open water surface using various floating covers with consideration of water ecology

Maram M. Shalaby et al.

Summary: The study found that using white floating covers can significantly reduce water reservoir evaporation in two different locations, with white balls having the greatest effect. When considering water ecology, white balls or 91% coverage white foam sheets are recommended for use. Further research in real reservoirs is needed to investigate the durability and stability of the used covers.
