Feed additives as a strategic approach to reduce enteric methane production in cattle: modes of action, effectiveness and safety

M. Honan et al.

Summary: Increasing concern over GHG contributions from cattle is driving the livestock industry to improve sustainability goals. Enteric methane production is a major contributor to GHG emissions and research on feed additives is showing promise in reducing CH4 emissions. Feed additives work by either inhibiting methanogenesis or modifying the rumen environment, leading to a reduction in CH4 production.

The effect of probiotics, phytobiotics and their combination as feed additives in the diet of dairy calves on performance, rumen fermentation and blood metabolites during the preweaning period

Barbara Stefanska et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding a combination of probiotics and phytobiotics as feed additives during the preweaning period can significantly improve calf growth, feed intake, and health status, reduce diarrhea and parasitic infections, as well as enhance rumen fermentation and biochemical blood indices. However, using phytobiotics with rosmarinic acid as the main bioactive component or probiotics alone as feed additives did not affect growth performance and physiological indices.

Summary: Research on the use of phytochemicals and essential oils as substitutes for chemical feed additives in ruminant feeding shows their potential to improve ruminal fermentation and enhance livestock performance. However, challenges remain in determining the optimal dosage and the adaptation of ruminal microflora to these additives.

Methane Emissions from Ruminants in Australia: Mitigation Potential and Applicability of Mitigation Strategies

John L. Black et al.

Summary: Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with significant contributions from ruminant animals like cattle and sheep. Reduction in enteric methane emissions from these animals is crucial for ecosystem preservation. Various strategies, including feed supplements and manipulation of rumen microbial population, have shown potential for reducing methane emissions.

Network analysis and functional estimation of the microbiome reveal the effects of cashew nut shell liquid feeding on methanogen behaviour in the rumen

Koki Maeda et al.

Summary: The feeding of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) was found to significantly reduce methane emissions in Lai Sind beef cattle, increase propionate production, inhibit methanogens, and lower methane metabolism through modulation of the rumen microbiome and its function. These findings suggest a new potential pathway for mitigating methane emissions from local cattle production systems in Southeast Asia.
