Diet supplementation with canola meal improves milk production, reduces enteric methane emissions, and shifts nitrogen excretion from urine to feces in dairy cows

C. Benchaar et al.

Summary: The study indicates that replacing solvent-extracted soybean meal with solvent-extracted canola meal in dairy cow diets can significantly reduce enteric CH4 emissions and increase milk production, with positive effects on animal productivity and the environment. Canola meal can successfully replace soybean meal, partially or fully, in lactating dairy cow diets, leading to a reduction in methane emissions and an increase in milk production efficiency. This substitution does not affect nitrogen excretion, but shifts it from urine to feces, reducing the potential for nitrogen volatilization and contributing to a decrease in the environmental footprint of milk production.
