Camelina, an ancient oilseed crop actively contributing to the rural renaissance in Europe. A review

Federica Zanetti et al.

Summary: Promoting crop diversification in European agriculture can enhance crop productivity, quality, and resilience while reducing environmental stresses. Camelina, with its broad environmental adaptability, low-input requirements, resistance to pests and diseases, and multiple uses, has been studied extensively in Europe over the past three decades. Despite its potential, further research and promotion are needed to scale up camelina cultivation in Europe.

Evolutionary changes in the glucosinolate biosynthetic capacity in species representing Capsella, Camelina and Neslia genera

Pawel Czerniawski et al.

Summary: The study analyzed glucosinolates in different organs of selected species belonging to the Capsella, Camelina, and Neslia genera, which are part of the Camelineae tribe within the Brassicaceae family. Glucosinolates were found to accumulate predominantly in siliques and roots of the investigated species, with little to no production in leaves. Additionally, there was reduced structural diversity of methionine-derived aliphatic glucosinolates and increased accumulation of rare long chain glucosinolates, possibly due to evolutionary changes in genes responsible for their biosynthesis. Furthermore, the biosynthetic pathway for tryptophan-derived indolic glucosinolates appears to have lost its main functions in immunity and resistance towards sucking insects, and may be in the process of being shut off in the investigated species.

Lipid Oxidation and Colour Stability of Lamb and Yearling Meat (Muscle longissimus lumborum) from Sheep Supplemented with Camelina-Based Diets after Short-, Medium-, and Long-Term Storage

Eric N. Ponnampalam et al.

Summary: This study found that feeding camelina meal can alter fatty acid composition in a more beneficial way for human health compared to control diet, while also affecting muscle vitamin E concentration. Additionally, factors such as animal type and storage length influence the color and lipid oxidative stability of meat.

Flaxseed and Camelina Meals as Potential Sources of Health-Beneficial Compounds

Silvia Tavarini et al.

Summary: Seed meals and cakes derived from minor oilseed crops are rich in proteins and bioactive compounds, making them valuable plant-derived feedstocks for various purposes. Flaxseed meal is a good source of lignans and hydroxycinnamic acid glucosides, while camelina meal contains glucosinolates and quercetin glycosides. All extracts exhibit strong radical-scavenging activity, making them promising sources for food and cosmetic ingredients with health benefits.

Spring camelina: Effect of mineral fertilization on the energy efficiency of biomass production

Krzysztof J. Jankowski et al.

Summary: This study found that high rates of nitrogen and sulfur fertilization can increase the energy output of camelina seeds and biomass, but high levels of nitrogen application can decrease the energy efficiency ratio of camelina production. Sulfur application can enhance the energy efficiency ratio of camelina in production technologies with high rates of nitrogen fertilization.

Assessment of Quality and Safety of Farm Level Produced Cheeses from Sheep and Goat Milk

Mariana Kovacova et al.

Summary: Consumption of sheep's and goat's milk and cheese is increasing, but there is still insufficient knowledge in the field of hygiene, technology and health safety of cheeses production. The study found that the month of milking influences the milk components content, while ripening time affects microbial safety and color of cheeses. The analyzed samples were deemed suitable for human consumption under applicable regulations.

Elaboration of goat cheese with increased content of conjugated linoleic acid and transvaccenic acid: Fat, sensory and textural profile

Cecilia Dauber et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the lipid and sensory profile modification of cheeses made with goat milk by including sunflower oil in the diet. Results showed that adding sunflower oil increased the fat content in cheeses without affecting their sensory profile and consumer acceptability. Additionally, the content of beneficial fatty acids such as CLA and TVA increased, while the atherogenic index decreased, suggesting that including sunflower oil in goats' diet could be a viable alternative for producing healthier cheeses.

The quality of milk of goats of Saanen, Alpine and Nubian breeds

A. S. Shuvarikov et al.

Summary: Dairy goat breeding is becoming more popular in Russia, with Saanen, Alpine, and Nubian breeds being the most common for industrial milk production. Studies found that Saanen goats have the highest milk yield, Nubian goats have the highest fat content in milk, and Alpine goats have the highest protein content in milk.
