High developmental temperature leads to low reproduction despite adult temperature

Marta A. Santos et al.

Summary: The study found that higher developmental temperatures led to lower reproductive performance, while lower temperatures only caused performance decline when maintained throughout the juvenile and adult stages. Exposing both juveniles and adults to higher temperatures did not have harmful cumulative effects. Both latitudinal populations exhibited similar thermal plasticity patterns.

Parasitic wasps do not lack lipogenesis

Joachim Ruther et al.

Summary: Fatty acids are essential for the survival of almost all organisms on Earth, and despite studies suggesting otherwise, research has shown that parasitic wasps also have the ability to synthesize fatty acids de novo.

At the Gate of Mutualism: Identification of Genomic Traits Predisposing to Insect-Bacterial Symbiosis in Pathogenic Strains of the Aphid Symbiont Serratia symbiotica

Francois Renoz et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genomes of culturable strains of Serratia symbiotica that are pathogenic to aphid hosts, revealing that these strains are in the early stages of adaptation to their hosts and harbor a greater diversity of virulence factors and metabolic pathways compared to their intracellular mutualistic relatives. The presence of gene clusters for antimicrobial compounds and phytotoxins in their genomes supports the hypothesis that S. symbiotia symbionts evolved from plant-associated strains with plants potentially serving as intermediate hosts. Mutualistic associations between insects and bacteria involve independent transitions to endosymbiosis, with the genomes of free-living S. symbiotica strains offering a rare opportunity to study the genes held by bacterial associates of insects at the gateway to a host-dependent lifestyle.
