Sucrase-isomaltase Gene Variants in Patients With Abnormal Sucrase Activity and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Chirajyoti Deb et al.

Summary: In non-Hispanic white pediatric and young adult patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), abnormalities in sucrase activity were found to be significantly associated with sucrase-isomaltase (SI) gene variants, often accompanied by lactase deficiency or pan-disaccharidase deficiencies. Heterozygous and compound heterozygous mutations in the SI gene were more common in cases with abnormal sucrase activity, suggesting a potential link between congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency and FGIDs.
