Drivers of distributions and niches of North American cold-adapted amphibians: evaluating both climate and land use

Travis Seaborn et al.

Summary: The study found that climate and human activities such as land use factors are closely related to the distribution of six cold-adapted amphibians in North America. Models incorporating both climate and land use data performed the best, but may underestimate the northern range edge, suggesting potential sampling bias or reduced habitat quality in that area.

Improving biological relevance of model projections in response to climate change by considering dispersal amongst lineages in an amphibian

Igor Boyer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of different lineages of B. variegata species to past and future climate changes in Europe by considering both lineage differentiation and dispersal distances. The results showed significant shifts in habitat suitability in response to past climate changes and uncertain persistence of all lineages in the future due to rapid and unprecedented changes in suitability, especially considering their limited dispersal abilities.

Species versus within-species niches: a multi-modelling approach to assess range size of a spring-dwelling amphibian

Forough Goudarzi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a multi-stage SDM approach to estimate the distributional range and potential area of occupancy (pAOO) of a spring-dwelling amphibian with two climatically-divergent evolutionary lineages, highlighting the importance of considering fine-scale resolution approaches and intraspecific genetic structure to estimate pAOO. The predictions of habitat suitability at landscape scale differed significantly between evolutionary level models, with lineage-level models recognizing a larger amount of suitable habitats than species-level models. Variable dependency of lineages was different at the landscape scale, but similar at the local scale.

Projecting the Impact of Climate Change on the Spatial Distribution of Six Subalpine Tree Species in South Korea Using a Multi-Model Ensemble Approach

Sanghyuk Lee et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a significant threat to global biodiversity, particularly affecting plant habitats in subalpine zones. Several coniferous species in South Korea are expected to experience significant habitat losses in the future due to climate change, with Korean arborvitae and Khingan fir being at high risk of extinction. Efforts in forest management and adaptation planning are needed to address these challenges and protect vulnerable species.

Estimating climate-induced 'Nowhere to go' range shifts of the Himalayan Incarvillea Juss. using multi-model median ensemble species distribution models

Santosh Kumar Rana et al.

Summary: This study used a species distribution model under climate change to explore the adaptability range changes of Incarvillea species in the Himalayas, showing larger ecological differentiation within the genus and subgenera by climatic rather than environmental variables. The model predicted an expansion of the species range in the Hengduan Mountains under future climate warming, but did not fully support the "Nowhere to go" hypothesis.

Predicting range shifts for critically endangered plants: Is habitat connectivity irrelevant or necessary?

Gabriel U. Yesuf et al.

Summary: This study assessed future range shifts for critically endangered plants in Madagascar, showing that habitat connectivity can limit range shifts due to contractions and increase shifts due to expansions for many plants. However, some plants are still expected to experience range contractions, indicating that even with habitat connectivity, the range of some species may still be affected. Including connectivity in range shift models is crucial for developing relevant conservation plans in the face of future climate change and land-cover change.

Phylogenomic inference of species and subspecies diversity in the Palearctic salamander genus Salamandra

James D. Burgon et al.

Summary: The genus Salamandra is widely distributed in Europe, North Africa, and the Near East. Research on the phylogenetic relationships within the genus, especially in the polymorphic species S. salamandra, has been challenging. The study confirmed the distinctiveness of recognized Salamandra species and suggested potential taxonomic revision for some subspecies within S. salamandra.

Summary: The study revealed that the Kaiser's mountain newt has two distinct lineages in the northern and southern regions that diverged in the Early-Pleistocene. Demographic analysis showed a slight increase in effective population size for both regions in the Mid-Pleistocene. Biogeography analysis indicated that both vicariance and dispersal events contributed to the current species distribution of N. kaiseri.

Embracing Ensemble Species Distribution Models to Inform At-Risk Species Status Assessments

Carlos Ramirez-Reyes et al.

Summary: This study highlights the importance of using ensemble modeling techniques to improve the accuracy and reliability of species distribution models for at-risk species. By incorporating ensemble models into conservation planning and species status assessments, it is possible to enhance survey efforts, inform recovery activities, and provide more robust status assessments for at-risk species. Collaborating closely with species experts to co-produce distribution models can lead to better calibration data and model refinements, ultimately enhancing the usability and impact of model outputs.

Design of Protected Area by Tracking and Excluding the Effects of Climate and Landscape Change: A Case Study Using Neurergus derjugini

Somaye Vaissi

Summary: This study aimed to design a protected area for the critically endangered yellow-spotted mountain newt, utilizing Ensemble Species Distribution Modelling, Geographical Information Systems, and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis. By tracking and excluding the effects of climate and landscape changes, the research proposed nominations for 10 different NPAs within high suitability habitats. The suitability scores for the NPAs were ranked based on various factors, providing a modern realistic approach for environmental management to plan conservation areas.
