Protein metalation by two structurally related gold(I) carbene complexes: An ESI MS study

Carlotta Zoppi et al.

Summary: This study comparatively investigated the reactions of two structurally related gold carbene compounds with model proteins, revealing that the monocarbene gold complex is more effective in forming protein adducts and both gold carbenes react more selectively with proteins at well-defined anchoring sites. These findings provide insights into the reactivity of gold carbene complexes with proteins and their potential implications in medicinal gold compounds research.

Platinum(IV) anticancer agents; are we en route to the holy grail or to a dead end?

Dan Gibson

Summary: Pt(IV) complexes are designed as prodrugs to overcome resistance by releasing cytotoxic Pt(II) drugs and axial ligands upon activation. The choice of axial ligands influences the chemical and pharmacological properties of the prodrug. Various strategies have been employed to increase the selectivity of prodrugs towards cancer cells and overcome resistance.

Thermodynamic Evaluation of the Interactions between Anticancer Pt(II) Complexes and Model Proteins

Chiara Pelosi et al.

Summary: In this study, the binding of three Pt(II) complexes with model proteins was analyzed, revealing that compounds 1 and 2 exhibit strong binding affinity while compound 3 shows low affinity. Additionally, significant differences were observed in the binding modes when transitioning from HEWL to RNase A.

Anticancer and antibacterial potential of robust Ruthenium(II) arene complexes regulated by choice of α-diimine and halide ligands

Emanuele Zanda et al.

Summary: The study found that certain ruthenium complexes exhibited remarkable stability in water and cell culture medium, showing strong cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines, with RUCYN being the most promising one with significant selectivity compared to non-cancerous cells. The variability of affinity of the complexes for BSA and DNA binding was determined, with certain complexes showing enhanced cell internalization and cytotoxicity at the expense of selectivity.
