A comparison of intestinal integrity, digestive function, and egg quality in laying hens with different ages

Y. F. Gu et al.

Summary: As laying hens age, there is an increase in intestinal permeability, compromised digestive function, and poor egg quality. This is marked by higher serum D-lactate content, lower digestive enzyme activities, reduced nutrient retention, higher concentrations of excreted amino acids, and decreased albumen height, shell strength, and thickness in eggs.
