Innovations to culturing the uncultured microbial majority

William H. Lewis et al.

Summary: The review emphasizes the importance of culturing microorganisms to complement genomic data. Despite the abundance of microbial genome data, experimental testing is crucial to confirm hypotheses about cell biology, ecological roles, and evolution. Culturing remains a priority as the majority of archaeal and bacterial diversity remains uncultured and poorly understood. Advances in efficient cultivation strategies have been driven by a growing interest in and need for cultivating novel microorganisms.

Microbiological safety and antibiotic resistance risks at a sustainable farm under large-scale open-air composting and composting toilet systems

Ning Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that open-air composting can significantly increase antibiotic resistance and effectively remove fecal pathogens, while composting toilets remove more antibiotic resistant bacteria but also contain more pathogens. Pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistant bacteria are mainly concentrated in mature compost, soil in planting areas, vegetables, and rainwater.

Enhanced control of sulfonamide resistance genes and host bacteria during thermophilic aerobic composting of cow manure

Muhammad Fahad Sardar et al.

Summary: Traditional composting has shown certain effects in eliminating antibiotic residues, ARBs, and ARGs. However, the rebounding of ARGs during conventional aerobic composting remains a serious threat. This study found that thermophilic aerobic composting can enhance the degradation of antibiotics, limit the rebounding of ARGs, and significantly influence bacterial diversity. Network analysis revealed potential hosts of ARGs and suggested that thermophilic composting may be more efficient in controlling antibiotic resistance compared to conventional methods.

The size distribution of airborne bacteria and human pathogenic bacteria in a commercial composting plant

Min Gao et al.

Summary: Composting plants are important sources of environmental bioaerosols, but the size distribution of airborne bacteria has limited our understanding of their health risks. This study analyzed the size-related abundance and communities of airborne bacteria, especially human pathogenic bacteria, in a composting facility, providing valuable information for assessing bacterial pathogenicity and potential health impacts on workers and residents.
