circNFATC3 sponges miR-548I acts as a ceRNA to protect NFATC3 itself and suppressed hepatocellular carcinoma progression

Changchang Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that circNFATC3 regulates the expression of NFATC3 through interacting with miR-548I, affecting hepatoma cell function via the JNK, c-Jun, AKT, and mTOR signaling pathways. The level of NFATC3 is downregulated in HCC patients and significantly correlated with the staging and prognosis of HCC, and both circNFATC3 and NFATC3 inhibit the phosphorylation of multiple signaling pathways.

Circular RNA circ-102,166 acts as a sponge of miR-182 and miR-184 to suppress hepatocellular carcinoma proliferation and invasion

Rong Li et al.

Summary: A novel circular RNA, circ-102,166, was found to be down-regulated in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its overexpression significantly inhibited proliferation, invasion, migration, and tumorigenicity of HCC cells by binding to miR-182 and miR-184 to regulate downstream targets. The down-regulation of circ-102,166 enhanced the proliferation and invasion of HCC cells by releasing oncomiRs miR-182 and miR-184.

circRNA circARNT2 Suppressed the Sensitivity of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells to Cisplatin by Targeting the miR-155-5p/PDK1 Axis

Yueyong Li et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that circARNT2 is significantly upregulated in HCC patients and can modulate cisplatin resistance through the miR-155-5p/PDK1 pathway. This suggests that circARNT2 may serve as a promising therapeutic target for overcoming cisplatin resistance in HCC.

circRASGRF2 functions as an oncogenic gene in hepatocellular carcinoma by acting as a miR-1224 sponge

Di Wu et al.

Summary: This study identified circRASGRF2 as significantly upregulated in HCC tissues and cell lines, promoting proliferation and migration of liver cancer cells by sponging miR-1224. Mechanistically, circRASGRF2 was found to enhance the expression of focal adhesion kinase (FAK) in HCC. These findings suggest circRASGRF2 as a central component linking circRNAs to HCC progression, making it a potential therapeutic target.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

Regulation of circular RNAs act as ceRNA in a hypoxic pulmonary hypertension rat model

Shuang-Lan Xu et al.

Summary: This study identified potential critical genes and circRNAs acting as ceRNAs in a HPH rat model. A ceRNA network was constructed, showing association with inflammatory response, NF-kappa B signaling, MAPK cascade, and Toll-like receptor. Certain circRNAs could potentially control downstream target genes by sponging miR-23a or miR-21 in the pathophysiology of HPH, as confirmed by qRT-PCR validation.

Summary: The research identified hsa_circ_0007456 as a promising biomarker for HCC, with its downregulation affecting the susceptibility of HCC cells to NK cells. Through modulation of the miR-6852-3p/ICAM-1 axis, hsa_circ_0007456 plays a crucial role in NK cell cytotoxicity towards HCC cells.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Circular RNA circDLC1 inhibits MMP1-mediated liver cancer via interaction with HuR

Hailing Liu et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that circDLC1 is downregulated in HCC tissues and is closely associated with a favorable prognosis. Overexpression of circDLC1 inhibits proliferation and motility of hepatoma cells, while silencing of circDLC1 has the opposite effect. Mechanistically, circDLC1 binds to RNA-binding protein HuR, reducing the interaction between HuR and MMP1 mRNA, leading to inhibition of MMP1 expression and ultimately suppressing HCC progression.
