The extracellular matrix viscoelasticity as a regulator of cell and tissue dynamics

Alberto Elosegui-Artola

Summary: The mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix play a crucial role in regulating cell and tissue behavior. While much research has focused on the elasticity of the extracellular matrix, the influence of its viscosity on cell behavior remains relatively understudied. Recent findings have highlighted the importance of the extracellular matrix's viscoelasticity in cell and tissue dynamics.

Mechanical behavior of multi-cellular spheroids under osmotic compression

M. Dolega et al.

Summary: The mechanical environment, both internal and external, plays a crucial role in tumorogenesis. By studying multicellular spheroids as proxies for avascular early state tumors, researchers have found that an active poroelastic material can reproduce stress and strain distributions within the aggregate, and predict changes in bulk modulus and hydraulic diffusion of interstitial fluid. The study suggests that the impermeable and incompressible nature of cells within a compressible and permeable matrix rationalizes the phenomenological parameters observed in the experiments.

Extracellular matrix in multicellular aggregates acts as a pressure sensor controlling cell proliferation and motility

Monika E. Dolega et al.

Summary: Research shows that global compressions have a significant impact on the growth and motion of cell aggregates, while selective compressions have almost no effect. By draining water out of the extracellular matrix, global compressions impose residual compressive mechanical stress on cells over a long timescale.
