Psychosocial impact of hidradenitis suppurativa: a practical guide for clinicians

Maximillian A. Weigelt et al.

Summary: The study identified depression and anxiety, sexuality and body image, and financial strain as the most significant drivers of poor HRQOL in HS patients, which can be screened for and addressed in a simple and efficient manner. A practical psychosocial management guide for clinicians was presented to improve the care of HS patients.

New insights into hidradenitis suppurativa diagnosis via salivary infrared biosignatures: A pilot study

Stephane Derruau et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of using infrared spectroscopy on saliva to diagnose hidradenitis suppurativa with an accuracy of about 80%. Risk factors such as obesity and smoking do not appear to affect the accuracy of infrared diagnosis for HS. This research highlights the possibility of developing a personalized medical approach for managing HS patients using salivary liquid biopsy combined with vibrational spectroscopy.

Long-standing refractory hidradenitis suppurativa responded to a brodalumab monotherapy in a patient with psoriasis: A possible involvement of Th17 across the spectrum of both diseases

Yasuyuki Yoshida et al.

Summary: HS is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with unclear etiopathology, but recent developments in targeting cytokines have led to the exploration of biologic therapies. A 47-year-old Japanese man successfully used brodalumab, an IL-17 receptor antagonist, to treat HS and psoriasis in the first reported case of its kind.

Potential predictive biomarkers of adalimumab response in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa

Y. Cao et al.

Summary: This study identified potential predictive biomarkers, including HCC-4, calprotectin, and fractalkine, for adalimumab response in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), as well as possible tumor necrosis factor-independent disease pathways. Additionally, it found that certain cytokines involved in inflammatory responses may contribute to disease drivers in adalimumab nonresponders.

Summary: The registration of adalimumab in 2015 marked a significant advancement in the treatment of HS, but its effectiveness in clinical practice is variable. Promising novel therapeutic targets for HS, such as IL-17 biologics and spesolimab targeting IL-36, are currently under investigation.

The Burden of Hidradenitis Suppurativa Signs and Symptoms in Quality of Life: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Trinidad Montero-Vilchez et al.

Summary: This study summarized the scientific evidence regarding the impact of signs and symptoms in HS patients on QoL, finding a strong correlation between the intensity of pain, itching, malodor, suppuration, and the overall QoL or specific QoL dimensions such as sexual distress, anxiety, depression, and sleep. Assessment of these symptoms should be thorough and included in the routine evaluation of HS patients to motivate treatment modifications and improve patient health.
