Recent Advances in Population Genomics of Plant-Parasitic Nematodes

Josselin Montarry et al.

Summary: Plant-parasitic nematodes are a significant burden on crop production, and population genetics plays a key role in understanding their life strategies. Advances in high-throughput sequencing technologies have facilitated rapid development in genomic analyses of plant-parasitic nematodes.

Nematode biphasic 'boom and bust' dynamics are dependent on host bacterial load while linking dauer and mouth-form polyphenisms

Tess Renahan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the succession and dispersal dynamics of nematodes and bacteria during insect decay, using developmentally plastic nematode Pristionchus pacificus and scarab beetles as models. It revealed the critical plastic traits in ecologically relevant survival strategies and observed a 'boom and bust' dispersal dynamic of dauer larvae corresponding to bacterial load on carcasses.

Parental energy-sensing pathways control intergenerational offspring sex determination in the nematode Auanema freiburgensis

Pedro Robles et al.

Summary: Environmental stimuli experienced by the parental generation can influence the phenotype of subsequent generations through the germline. Metabolic sensors regulate phenotypic plasticity by modulating the subcellular localization of their effectors, leading to changes in chromatin acetylation and epigenetic status of the germline.

Differential effects of nematode infection on pollinating and non-pollinating fig wasps: Can shared antagonism provide net benefits to a mutualism?

Justin Van Goor et al.

Summary: Species pairs forming mutualistic associations are part of broader organismal community networks, shaping the evolution of individual mutualisms through various interactions. Limited understanding exists on how community associates impact the fitness of mutualists. In a model interaction network, the infection of non-pollinating fig wasps by nematodes was found to impact their survival and dispersal ability more severely than the mutualistic partner, indicating a novel role of density-dependent facultative mutualism.

Transcriptional profiles in Strongyloides stercoralis males reveal deviations from the Caenorhabditis sex determination model

Damia Gonzalez Akimori et al.

Summary: Research on Strongyloides stercoralis suggests that steroid hormones may regulate male development in this parasitic nematode, as observed in permissive hosts treated with corticosteroids. By utilizing RNA-Seq, specific genes encoding transmembrane proteins expressed only in free-living males were identified. Additionally, homologs of genes important for sex determination in Caenorhabditis species were found, suggesting different mechanisms control male development between S. stercoralis and Caenorhabditis species.
