Ceramides mediate positional signals in Arabidopsis thaliana protoderm differentiation

Kenji Nagata et al.

Summary: The study reveals the crucial role of verylong-chain fatty acid-containing ceramides (VLCFA-Cers) in mediating positional signals during cell differentiation in Arabidopsis thaliana. By stimulating the function of the master regulator ATML1, VLCFA-Cers play a pivotal role in directing protoderm/epidermis differentiation during lateral root development. This protein-lipid association alters the activity of ATML1, restricting its expression to the protoderm/epidermis through a transcriptional feedback loop.

Summary: The study reveals that KCS4 plays a crucial role in pollen tube and root growth, is regulated by KCS inhibitors, and is involved in the elongation of longer VLCFAs. Expression rescue of KCS4 can rescue the growth-retarded phenotype.

Summary: This study investigates the biological roles and properties of glycosyl inositol phosphoryl ceramides (GIPCs) in plant plasma membrane (PM). The results showed that GIPCs play important roles in regulating the thickness, electronegativity, and the gel-to-fluid phase transition of model membranes.
